About DK Cumming

Denise K. Cumming was born in Fort Worth, TX and received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Utah.  She spent 5 years raising buffalo outside Taos, NM foregoing previously held management positions with various nonprofit organizations in favor of the independence of life on a 9000 acre ranch with its wide open vistas, isolation and hard physical work.  Although she now resides in Knoxville, TN the influence of Texas, the Southwest and Mountain West has never left her and is a primary force behind much of her art.

While not specifically trained in the fine arts, Denise has always engaged in various art pursuits, from self-taught folk art influenced painting and abstract large-scale carvings, to more formal classes in clay, mixed media and collage. Her works over the past few years have evolved into a more abstract form.  Denise’s work with color, layers and texture evokes the varied, colorful, often stark, landscapes seen in the West - horizons and a sense of big sky often show up in her work.

DK works mainly in acrylics adding pumice and other stuff to create many layers and structured depth.  She employs the use of hardware style tools like drywall blades, putty knifes and scrapers to create unique textures.

Many people express the wish to reach out and touch the canvas.  DK encourages touching the paintings (with clean hands of course) and if you purchase one, touch all you like!

Denise does commissions.  If you see a style you like but want different colors or have a project you would like to talk about just give her a call.
